Nursing

January 22, 2011

I have thought about becoming a nurse.

I know they are in high demand. I know they get paid well. I know I can work all over the world.

I have practically no science or math college credits so I would need to spend the next 1-2 years taking prep classes so I could enter a program.

If I do this, I would need to find a way to pay for these prep classes. I would need to find a place to live. I would probably need to work while I do it so I don’t starve.

Let’s start with money. I have none. Pretty much zero.

So I would need some form of aid. Perhaps that is possible, so lets say I get some loan or something so I can prep for nursing school.

Now, can I even do this. I honestly think that given enough time to study, I can pass all prep classes with a relatively decent grade, thereby allowing me to go to nursing school.

Do I want to do this? I like the idea of being a nurse. I am interested in health care, and I enjoy working with people, even if their leg is severed.

Will being a nurse fulfill my desires? Probably not, but it wouldn’t be a bad place to start from. I would have a decent job, always be able to find work, be flexible in regards to location, and have room to upgrade my abilities by going back to school for higher degrees.

Why did I think of this in the first place? I am interested in world health. I think the world needs to seriously evaluate how immigration and income inequality will effect the future of overall health.

Does nursing help me to get involved with that? Well, part of me thinks it does because I will have a working knowledge of our health crisis from the ground up.

Is there another way to go about this? Yes, I think public policy would be another way to go. There are ties to this crisis, in government policy and law, both of which are other degrees I have thought about.

What happens when I start the prep course, and don’t really know if I will be happy with the outcome? Meaning, how can I be sure I will be happy with my decision if I totally gear my life towards becoming a nurse? I have no clue and that scares me a bit.

Personally, I think you would look ravishing in a nurses uniform.
